Album Review: "And The Pursuit of Happiness" by Kenny Dubman

BY STEVE THIRIOT

From the onset, Kenny Dubman's "And The Pursuit of Happiness" asserts itself as a sonic manifesto championing guitar-driven rock in an age of digitized, auto-tuned soundscapes. This album brings listeners back to the roots of rock music, balancing between raw, emotive power and intimate storytelling.

“Robbing You Blind” The opening track bursts into the room with energy and dynamism. The guitar riffs here are undeniably infectious. Dubman's vocals complement the instrumental grit.

With no signs of slowing the momentum built by the previous track “You Belong” remains powerful; The anthemic chorus could easily find fans singing along at live concerts.

“Stuck on Replay” Perhaps a commentary on life's monotony or the memories we can't escape, "Stuck on Replay" offers listeners a more introspective look at the human condition. The recurrent guitar loops resonate with the theme of repetition, creating a mesmerizing and relatable track.

“Beautiful Like You” A love letter in the form of a song, "Beautiful Like You" exudes appreciation and adoration. The instrumentation here is lighter and more melodic, drawing attention to the poignant lyrics that celebrate the object of the singer's affection. “For The Taking” Filled with ambitious undertones, this track speaks of opportunities and the courage to seize them. The drumbeat stands out, driving the song forward and symbolizing the march towards one's desires.

“Winter Wind” Concluding the album on a contemplative note, and my personal favorite on the album. "Winter Wind" likely delves into themes of change, introspection, and perhaps, the inevitable chill of lost love or time's passage. The gentle guitar strums with the occasional bursts of electric excitement paired with Dubman's heartfelt vocal delivery make this track an introspective ending, leaving listeners in a reflective state.

In "And The Pursuit of Happiness", Kenny Dubman wears his heart on his sleeve, bringing passion and honesty to every note and lyric. While paying homage to the vintage rock sounds of yesteryears, he simultaneously crafts a narrative that feels fresh and relevant to today's world. This album is a reminder of the timeless appeal of authentic, guitar-driven rock and roll, and its potential to convey stories that resonate across generations.

Album Review: "Dirty Damn Tricks" by The L.A. Maybe

BY STEVE THIRIOT

The L.A. Maybe: 'Dirty Damn Tricks' - Sleaze Roxx

If you're longing for the raw, raucous sounds of classic rock combined with fresh, energetic twists, The L.A. Maybe's "Dirty Damn Tricks" will sate your musical appetite.

Emerging from the southern furnace of the Carolinas, this group not only captures the essence of their hometown's sweltering heat but also seamlessly channels the roaring energy of Australia's legendary rock bands - Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, and of course, the thunder from down under, AC/DC.

Yet, they don’t stop there. Elements of Guns N' Roses' fierce swagger and The Black Crowes' groovy rhythms also permeate their sound, but with a unique twist that only The L.A. Maybe can provide. The album transports listeners to a sun-soaked ride through the glamorous and gritty streets of pre-Covid Tinseltown.

Every track screams of passionate performances and a refusal to adhere strictly to any set formula. While it's clearly rooted in classic rock, it isn't a mere homage. Instead, it redefines the genre, offering a contemporary spin that showcases the band's versatility.

Mr. Danger” A dynamic opener that sets the stage with its high-octane energy, reminiscent of AC/DC's signature punch. Sucker Punch”  Aptly named, this track surprises with its rhythmic shifts and guitar solos that leave you reeling. “Oh Sugar” - A groovy, foot-tapping number that will undoubtedly inspire impromptu dance sessions.

“She's Reckless” This track encapsulates wild adventures with its infectious riffs and relentless rhythm. “Peace of Mind” A slower, introspective piece that offers a respite while showcasing the band's depth.

"When I'm Gone"  A poignant ballad that speaks to the transient nature of fame and fortune. “Take Me Away” This song beautifully conveys the longing for something new. “Sweet”  A heady blend of sultry vocals and sizzling guitar work that seduces the listener. “Fake” A biting commentary on the superficiality, wrapped in an energetic package. “Up Next To You” A heartfelt conclusion, capturing the essence of love and camaraderie.

The L.A. Maybe's "Dirty Damn Tricks" is a modern classic, reminiscent of the giants of the rock era, yet it's refreshingly contemporary. It champions the New Wave of Classic Rock, being familiar enough to lure you in and unique enough to keep you hooked. For anyone pining for the golden age of rock but with a modern touch, this album is a must-have. It's more than a nostalgic trip; it's a reimagining of what classic rock can be in the modern era. Highly recommended.

Album Review of "Spine" by Dark Sun

BY STEVE THIRIOT

Emerging from the vibrant scene of Chicago, Dark Sun showcases their talent in the realm of heavy rock with their sophomore album, "Spine." Combining the raw energy from Tristan Sheedlo's vocals and lead guitar, the rhythm backbone provided by Luke Sheedlo, Aaron Dennin, and Morgan Earp, the album promises and delivers a roller-coaster of emotions packed in hard-rock anthems.

The album starts off  what seems reminiscent of an old answering machine recording for the intro; The album officially kicks off with "Forsaken" boasting a compelling riff, almost like a call to arms for rock fans. Tristan’s powerful vocals are eerily similar to that of the late great Lynn Staley lamenting themes of isolation and abandonment, setting the tone for what’s to come.

"Drag Me Down" - A more fast-paced track with addictive drum patterns from Luke. The chorus is catchy, making it a potential favorite for many. The guitar solo midway is an exhibition of raw energy and technical prowess.

True to its name, "Drowning" immerses listeners into a melancholic journey. The introspective lyrics combined with a sloid driving tempo reveal the band’s versatility and their ability to tap into deeper emotions. "Hate You" A rebellion anthem. The song's title suggests a track full of rage, and it doesn't disappoint. With gritty vocals, the track resonates with anyone who's ever felt strong antagonism or anger. The bass line by Aaron Dennin is particularly noteworthy here.

“Trapped In The Dark” A melodious yet aggressively haunting number. The interplay between Morgan Earp’s rhythm guitar and Tristan's lead provides an eerie atmosphere, apt for the song’s title. The drum beats, meanwhile, feel like a heartbeat in the shadows, echoing the sentiments of feeling lost and trapped.

The title track "Spine",  Starts off somber and determined. The instrumentation is tight, with each band member shining, offering a fitting culmination to the album. This is arguably my favorite track on the album.

Dark Sun has managed to deliver a cohesive sound that is unmistakably theirs. Their unique blend of heavy rock, nuanced with moments of introspection, makes for a thrilling listening experience. The technical prowess of the band members is commendable, especially the guitar work which shines throughout the album.

"Spine" by Dark Sun is a solid sophomore effort, showcasing the band's potential to be one of the heavy rock mainstays. While there is room for growth and evolution, the passion, energy, and talent are undeniable. It's a must-listen for fans of the genre and offers several tracks that could easily become anthems in rock venues across the globe.

Minneapolis' Rogue Royal unleashes their latest album, "Wasted Life." With its undeniable energy and audacious sound, it's an album that not only pays tribute to rock's luminaries but also carves out its own place in the modern rock landscape.

“Break You” The album's opener is a track that is instantly relatable and has all the feels. With pleading lyrics like “Please don't waste away” Intricate guitar riffs and vocal grit serve as a fierce statement, setting the tone for what's to come. The instrumentation on this track showcases the band's tight synergy and collective talent. “What You Need” offers a slightly mellower atmosphere but retains its punchy character. It's a song that speaks volumes, suggesting a narrative of desire, longing, and fulfillment. The crescendo towards the chorus is particularly infectious, prompting listeners to tap their feet or nod their heads in sync.

A ballad-like offering, "Fallin' (Hate Me)" strips back some of the band's heavier tendencies to showcase the raw, emotional underbelly of their music. The song's somber tones are contrasted beautifully with moments of luminosity, portraying the duality of love and heartbreak make this one of the standout tracks on the album.

“You” pulling on the threads of retribution or karma. It's a delightful presentation with excellent lyrical content, where the instrumental layers subtly mirror the depth of human feeling.

The closing track, "Paradox" presents a well written and well arranged epic finale. The song’s title aptly reflects the contrasting styles present within - a fusion of traditional and modern rock elements. By interweaving slower, brooding verses with explosive choruses, Rogue Royal takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotion, culminating in a purifing end to a riveting album.

Wasted Life serves as a lasting reminder to Rogue Royal's ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. Their deep respect for rock legends, evident in their sound and thematic choices, is seamlessly merged with their unique style, creating an album that's both nostalgic and refreshingly new.

"Lucky" by Megan Moroney is nothing short of a pleasant surprise (Album Review)

BY STEVE THIRIOT

Lucky (Megan Moroney album) - Wikipedia

Not very often am I taken aback by an Artist. Megan Moroney was never on my radar. Coming from the world of all things Metal, I should never have discovered this artist; But as fate would have it or Spotify Advertising; "Lucky," by Megan Moroney was nothing short of a pleasant surprise. This thirteen-track collection offers a somber yet refreshing experience with lyrical stories that capture the complexities of love, life, and self-discovery.

The album kicks off with "I'm Not Pretty," which immediately caught my attention with its clever and refreshingly honest lyrics. It's an impressive nod to the reality of our modern world, demonstrating Moroney's talent for storytelling through music.

The title track, "Lucky," brings an upbeat country vibe that makes you want to let loose and dance a little. It's a nice contrast to the introductory track and shows the versatility of Moroney's music.

"Tennessee Orange" is an emotional narrative of romantic and familial complexities, exemplified by the rivalry between Georgia and Tennessee. This track is among the most popular on Spotify, and it's not hard to see why.

Other standout tracks include "Girl in The Mirror," a stripped-down, raw portrayal of a troubled love story, and "Another on the Way," where Moroney's vocals shine brilliantly against the backdrop of a pleasing country tempo.

"Traitor Joe" and "Why Johnny" stand as warnings of deceptive love, while "God plays a Gibson" offers a playful juxtaposition to my belief that "The Devil plays a Solar". All joking aside, this track is solid. "Georgia Girl" is an homage to Moroney's roots, and "Sleep on my side" brings a faster pace that refreshes the ear before diving into the slower, piano-driven "Mustang or me."

Closing the album is "Sad Songs for Sad People," a contemplative track that solidifies the album's introspective nature.

"Lucky" is a striking balance between modern lyricism and traditional country elements. Megan Moroney's talent for storytelling is evident in every track, and her vocal performance brings each narrative to life.

Although the album is thirteen-tracks, it never feels monotonous, with each track offering a unique tale to the listener. This album is an excellent choice for those moments when you want to take a break from your own drama and immerse yourself in someone else's, even if only for a little while.

Her strong, resonating voice breathes life into lyrics like "I ain't a fool boy, and you ain't slick," casting an honest and unflinching look at deceit. "Broken Record" - This song is a narrative wonder, lyrically profound and melodically poignant. The metaphor of a broken record effectively captures the cyclical nature of heartbreak, reinforcing the Devon Worley Band's reputation for sophisticated songwriting.

"Leave Me Slow" - The tempo drops slightly for this near-heartbreaking piece, beautifully constructing a somber soundscape. The lyrics tell a tale of slow, creeping separation, artfully encapsulated in the slow-tempo arrangement. It’s a track that leaves a lingering melancholy and resonates with anyone who has ever experienced a gradual ending.

"Wytch Hunt" - The album finishes on a high note with this up-tempo track. As an energetic closer, "Wytch Hunt" demonstrates the band's versatility and capacity to electrify listeners. It leaves a strong aftertaste that ensures the album won't easily be forgotten.

Immigrant Song - Single by Devon Worley Band | Spotify

Worth Noting; While I was listening to the bands Spotify page, I found The Devon Worley Band's cover of Led Zeppelin's “Immigrant Song”. This is nothing short of a musical treat. With Worley's distinct vocal prowess at the helm, the song is revitalized, giving it a fresh and unique interpretation.

While the iconic raw energy of the original is preserved, Worley and her band skillfully weave in their signature country-rock elements, creating an intriguing blend that makes the track stand out.

The band's ability to make this version of their own while maintaining the essence of the original is nothing short of remarkable, demonstrating their genuine love for music and a keen sense for reinvention.
