From the very onset of "Colossus", Backlash makes it abundantly clear that they are no strangers to the thrash metal scene. Their brutal, unyielding sound channels the spirit of the genre’s golden age while forging a fresh and distinct path. This relentless aural assault is captivating and holds the listener in thrall through the entire 9-track journey.
The album kicks off with "Sleight of Hand", a punishing introduction full of blistering riffs and driving drum beats. The track’s deftly structured chaos creates an atmosphere of exhilaration that truly sets the tone for the album. The transitions between the verses and choruses are flawlessly executed, indicating a band that’s honed their craft to a fine point.
"Call of the Void" continues the pedal to the metal assault, with powerful riffs, and an intricate lyrical narrative that guides the listener into the darkest corners of their psyche. A near hypnotic, repeating guitar motif grates against the listener's comfort zone, echoing the theme of existential dread.
"God of Destruction" is the album’s standout track, boasting some of the most complex instrumental work. "Lost Liberty" is a wonderfully written thrash anthem, giving each member of the band a chance to shine.
The album closes with "Lenity", an unexpected but welcome banger that provides aggression before it builds into an onslaught of systematic drum and guitar attacks and crushing solo’s a powerful climax, offering a sense of closure to the album’s journey.
Backlash have proven with "Colossus" that they can masterfully combine elements of thrash metal's past with a modern edge. They're not just relying on the genre’s tropes; they're expanding upon them. The production is stellar throughout, keeping every instrument in the mix without sacrificing the raw energy inherent in thrash metal. Lyrically, the album maintains a balance between outwardly societal themes and introspective reflections, offering listeners a deeper connection beyond the aural mayhem.
